When you think of food delivery, pizza is usually one of the first kinds of food that comes to mind, and restaurants like Round Table Pizza, Domino’s and Pizza Hut. It’s almost a given that a pizza restaurant provides pizza delivery service. Pizza is a food of convenience—slap a bunch of toppings on top of a round bread crust, cut into slices and serve. No need for forks and knives, unless it’s deep dish. And pizza delivery is the epitome of convenience itself. Why go out to order when you can just call and have a piping hot fresh pizza right outside your door?

Of course, there are critics of this practice. Sometimes you’re in a hurry and you don’t have time to make dinner, and in that case pizza delivery is a viable option. However, some worry that eating in too often promotes inactivity that contributes to an overweight epidemic. It doesn’t help that pizza delivery food tends to be high in calories. There are extra large pizza options, and the food doesn’t just entail pizza—often customers order soda and appetizers on the side that can sometimes be meals in themselves. This contribution to declining health is a potential danger, but real visible danger manifested through the ill-fated Domino’s 30 minutes or less delivery policy. Customers were guaranteed their pizzas delivered in less than half an hour or their pizzas were free. In order to lose as little money as possible, pizza delivery drivers drove as fast as they could. Unfortunately, this resulted in the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a
Domino’s pizza delivery car trying to make the deadline. Speed may have its conveniences, but it has its pitfalls as well. This incident demonstrated the possible ramifications of an increasingly fast paced society.

Nevertheless, pizza delivery remains as alive and well as ever, minus the 30 minute guarantee of course. Pizza restaurant booths become emptier and emptier as more customers opt to order from home instead. And in more recent times, pizza isn’t the only food being delivered. Even sit-down restaurants provide delivery service now. Sushi delivery in particular has become very popular and while sushi might seem to be healthier than pizza, it can also pack on the calories when accompanied by sugary drinks and abundant appetizers. It’s not so much about the food, but the underlying significance of it. It’s indicative of a society that places more importance on convenience over health, and we’ve already began to reap what we’ve sown.
